ABOUT ALEX

Scottish born, internationally trained, my passion for horses first developed under the instruction of French eventer Vincent Massiot at his centre in the South of France. After collecting a few rosettes in show jumping I turned to schooling and became the 'test pilot' for all the new arrivals.

Returning to Scotland as a pre-teen, I began schooling and competing for individual owners. A few years down the line I broadened to breaking and backing for individuals. I took the leap to become a full time equestrian by taking a placement at Belmont House Stud in Ireland, aged 16.

Coached by Andrea Etter, it was at her stud in Ireland I experienced the process of producing world-class bred sporthorses for the international show jumping circuit. I accepted a long term position during which I broke, backed and schooled her youngsters.

Keen to travel and experience a variety of training, I finished my placement in Ireland to lend a brief hand to French eventer Thomas Carlile. I joined his team for the month leading up to and during the FEI world breeding eventing championships for young horses.

Remaining in the eventing world, I ventured out of Europe to New Zealand, training first at Cheleken Equestrian then on to work for Nicoli Fife at Charlton Stud. Here, I was introduced to the Kiwi eventing scene and loved it so much I stayed for just shy of 3 years! It was while working at Charlton Stud that equine muscle release practitioner Lynley Moroney treated the 5 year olds I was bringing on. After their treatment, my youngsters were more balanced, supple, willing and responsive; all of which made my job of schooling them much easier. I knew I had to learn this therapy so I applied for the 2 year diploma course. Lynley is the EMRT tutor for New Zealand courses, however, she had prior commitments to working with (among others) Olympic dressage rider Julie Broughan in preparation for the Rio Games.

This left me the choice of deferring for one year or taking the course in Australia, I wasn't feeling patient... I was accepted onto the Australian course tutored by Ali Goward at the Equus College of Learning and Research, the home of EMRT, obtaining my diploma.

For all my love of New Zealand, it's a long way from family in Scotland, and so I ended my visa in August 2017 to base myself in central Scotland

I would like to thank all my coaches, instructors and tutors for the experience I gained working with them.
